Swim Lessons Guide
Class | Description |
Water Babies
|
Parents and babies explore introductory swim skills in a positive interactive class through instruction and water play. |
Aqua Tots
|
Explore introductory swim skills in a positive interactive class through instruction and water play. Prepares child for preschool water exploration. |
Preschool Water
|
Introduction to basic swim skills and strokes. All skills are done with instructor assistance. |
Preschool Level 1
|
Develop basic swim skills and front and back strokes. Passing skills will be accomplished without instructor assistance. Prerequisites: complete Preschool Water Exploration. |
Preschool Level 2
|
Continue to develop basic swim skills and strokes. Introduction to freestyle, backstroke, elementary back stroke and diving. Passing skills will be accomplished without instructor assistance. Prerequisites: comfortable in water, submerge full face, and floate on front and back. |
Youth Level 1
|
Develop basic swim skills and front and back strokes. Passing skills will be accomplished without instructor assistance. No prerequisites required- entry level |
Youth Level 2
|
Continue to develop basic swim skills and strokes. Introduction to freestyle, backstroke, elementary back stroke and diving. Passing skills will be accomplished without instructor assistance. Prerequisites: comfortable in water, submerge full face, and float on front and back. |
Youth Level 3 |
Work on stroke development and diving. Introduction to whip kick, flip turns and treading water. Prerequisites: comfortable in water, front and back floats, elementary backstroke arms, introduced to deep water. |
Youth Level 4 |
Work on stroke development and endurance. Introduction to butterfly stroke, breaststroke, and feet first surface dives. Prerequisites: swim freestyle and backstroke for 15 yards, swim underwater, tread water and diving. |
Youth Level 5 |
Review and refine swim strokes and dives. Work on endurance. Introduction to side stroke. Prerequisites: swim 25 yards continously, freestyle, backsroke, breaststroke, jumping into deep water, and tread water for 1 minute. |
Youth Level 6 |
Refinement for all strokes. Increase swim endurance. Prerequisites: swim all strokes continuously, retrieve object 10 ft underwater, and tread water for 2 minutes. |

Adult Lessons |
Swimming is not only an essential life skill, but it’s a cardio and resistance workout in one! The Y is now offering Adult Group Swim Lessons for Beginner and Intermediate Swimmers. Depending on your experience, sign up for the beginner class to become familiar with the water and learn basic swimming fundamentals. Choose the intermediate class to learn better swim techniques, drills, and basic training principles. |
Aquatics Personal

Our aquatics personal training offers you a 30-minute one-on-one session, which gives you a personal experience not found in a group setting. Water‘s natural resistance and balance, provide the perfect setting for water training to get a great total body workout. Aquatics personal training is also great for those with sports injuries, orthopedic concerns and people in need of a workout variety. It is also great for those considering triathlons, swim teams, or any other aquatic performance-based activities. |
Competitive Lessons |
Our qualified instructors offer individualized lessons for the advanced or competitive swimmer in a positive and encouraging environment. Lessons are geared towards individual interests. This may include: technique development of the four competitive swim strokes, starts, turns and finishes, speed training, and race strategy. |
Private Lessons |
Our private swim lesson program offers individualized 30-minute lesson plans for people of all ages and abilities. Our instructors will work one-on-one with you or your child to improve on the many elements of swimming. We have several qualified instructors who can accommodate your schedule. |
Safety Education |
The Aberdeen Family YMCA offers safety education courses. Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor Training, and provides participants the opportunity to learn life-saving skills and become certified for fun and rewarding jobs. YMCA aquatics staff even have the ability to work year-round! The Y also offers CPR/AED classes for adult, child and infant certifications as well as first aid. For more information Click Here |
